According to the Defense Logistics Agency, a contract dispute that has halted production has caused most base exchange stores to run out of women’s hot weather uniforms.
The Army and Air Force are fighting Golden Manufacturing Co. Inc., which received a $22.6 million contract from the Defense Department in April 2021 to produce trousers for the services. This is the source of the shortage.
The summer heat wave that has scorched many parts of the country with unusually high temperatures coincides with the lack of weather-appropriate clothing for female troops. Because many military bases are in hotter regions of the country, the Improved Hot Weather Combat Uniform is a sought-after item.
Some female soldiers have chosen to buy male versions of the hot weather uniform and pay to have them tailored to meet the professional presentation standards that all soldiers must meet.
As a result of a lack of hot-weather gear and a forced reliance on male attire, women in the military are already facing a new set of challenges.
The soldier stated, “It’s not just a safety issue.”It is unprofessional and prevents them from performing their duties.
According to a spokesperson for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, it needed to be made clear when the stores would be able to restock shelves for women.
Golden Manufacturing is the only company that makes trousers for women, though several businesses produce uniforms for the Army and Air Force. There is no widespread shortage of men’s uniforms because other companies also make them.
